Grrrrrrrrrr when it rains it pours sometimes

My 530i is in the shop for a new driveshaft and sway bar links and will be done soon. No biggie - I’ll drive the manual Corolla (wife’s not too comfortable with it yet) and my wife will drive our Montero. Came home from Mass on Sunday and close the driver door on the corolla - back window shatters. Get my kid out of his seat (he thought it was funny, his mom freaked a little), Shop-Vac all the pieces and get it cleaned up.

I call Safelite on Monday thinking it’s a cheap fix since there are about 6 trillion Corollas running around. Nope, $300 and two to three weeks to get the glass in stock. Sigh.

So we are sharing the Montero until either other car is ready. Could be worse. Could be a lot better.

Woah the Corolla just shattered? I’m glad my family has 8 cars for 4 people because at one time either my car or my sisters always needs fixed.

Yeah, weirdest thing ever. I didn’t slam the door or anything, just closed it normal. Maybe being 22 years old has an effect (I’m no glassologist) or being in an en environment the last 4 years of -50° winters and 100° summers took a toll.

This glass is 3x what I paid for the car 2 years ago.

Older corollas are best corollas.

I keep telling my wife I’ll lift it and make a pseudo rally car looking thing

Wow, that sucks. I remember that my dad once had a shattered door window, while the car was just parked inside the garage, but that car was only 2 years old, so I think shattering windows have more to do with (manufacturing) imperfections than with age or weather. Probably it was just a combination of those three factors, together with the slight change in air pressure of closing the doors.

The side windows and backlite are made from tempered (“toughened”) glass, which is under an enormous amount of internal stress. Essentially they heat the piece of glass up to a certain temperature, the quench (cool) it rapidly. This puts the inner part into tension and the outer layers under compression. Tempered glass can withstand a lot more bending, impacts, and temperature swings than normal plate glass, but the tiniest crack will cause it to go “POP” into a million little pebbles. Yours could have just had a latent flaw which took this long to rear its ugly head.

“Prince Rupert’s drops” we’re how tempered glass was discovered.

The rear glass on my wife’s Chevy Volt did that a couple years ago. I was going out to run a quick errand and when I closed the driver’s door, the back glass just fell into the trunk. At the time, the car was only a few months old. Also, it was snowing, so I had to quickly make a hole in the garage and move the car inside. Then, I went in and told my wife what happened. She took it pretty well.

Check your local self service junkyard for used glass. The one near me has a glass installer located in the parking lot. It is much cheaper.

Our Silverado dually’s window just shattered on it by itself a few night shifts ago.

always odd when a window breaks for seemingly no reason. I came out to my car one day and thought someone had broken my driver’s window, but nothing was missing. and then I noticed all the glass was blown outwards, not smashed inwards.

crazy that it’s 2-3 weeks! I like you would have assumed for such a common car there’d be at least one sitting in a warehouse somewhere, and 2-3 days to ship it to your location would make sense.

Check with a Toyota dealer for the glass. Some years ago, someone busted out one of the little triangle windows on the rear door of our Tercel. I called a local glass shop and they wanted $440. I literally asked the woman on the phone to repeat herself twice because I didn’t believe what she was saying.

The Toyota dealer installed the same piece for $130.

That sucks! I would keep checking for glass, tough. There’s no way if should take 3 weeks to get a window for something like a Corolla. Maybe Safelite just sent all of their glass down here where we had the worst hail storm in decades 2 weeks ago.

I checked our only junkyard, the glass is $140, install is $80 and the rubber seal another $30.

It’s like they forgot what a junkyard was for

That would make sense, the demand is there. I’m probably the only person in the surrounding states (ND, WY, MT, IA) that broke glass on their corolla

Probably so. On the plus side it is the back window so in a pinch if you absolutely need both cars at the same time you can tape a tarp over it and be OK for a short drive. Lots of cars with missing rear windows on the road here at he moment.
